SW CO Shoulder Season
« on: November 13, 2017, 12:16:55 AM »
We've had unusually warm temps and limited snow so far this Fall in SW Colorado. For the last 3 weekends, I've been doing some Alpine overnighters along and around the Colorado trail just North of Durango. I haven't seen a single other cyclists (or anybody at all besides a handful of elk hunters) during this window.

CO Trail, late October. No snow, but plenty cold.

Engineer Mtn + fresh snow.

even on the warm days, the alpine conditions are still good for the first 3 hours of daylight. If you get caught out above the treeline once it gets above freezing, conditions deteriorate quickly and you'll be slugging it out. The snow in the dark timber stays good until early afternoon. I've gotten in some amazing descents: 4,200 vertical feet in 6 miles in 4-6 inches snow comes to mind [emoji106]
